Det var ham, der var midtpunktet, når The doors stod på en scene, og det var ham, pressen interesserede sig for. Efter Jim Morrisons død var de øvrige gruppemedlemmer desuden heller ikke i stand til at skabe musik, der gjorde indtryk.
Når The Doors stod på en scene, var der ikke blot tale om en koncert. Det var rockteater uden rekvisitter. Jim Morrison var en intelligent kunstner som skrev avancerede tekster. Men alligevel forstod folk hans budskab.
The End
The Doors og Jim Morrison var blevet en levende myte. De store forventninger til gruppen kvalte deres kreativitet. Fordi publikum blev mere krævende, endte nogle af gruppens optrædener i kaos.
Denne tumult gav dem et utilregneligt omdømme over for myndigheder og koncertarrangører. Konsekvensen af dette blev at mange arrangører ikke ville engagere The Doors. I andre byer forbød myndighederne deres optrædende.
Jim Morrison oparbejdede et farligt alkohol- og stofmisbrug. Desuden lignede han ikke længere det idol, han havde været, da The Doors slog igennem.
For at komme til hægterne igen fysisk og psykisk, rejste Jim i 1971 til Paris. Men den hårde livsførelse medførte at Jim Morrison døde af et hjertetilfælde samme år d. 3/7. han ligger begravet på kirkegården Pére Lachaise i Paris. Folk valfarter stadig til hans grav den dag i dag.
De resterende tre medlemmer fortsatte en tid som trio uden kommerciel succes og et par år senere gik gruppen i opløsning. Til gengæld er Jim Morrisons sjæl selv mange år efter han gik bort forblevet et idol for mange. Hans ånd lever videre som et symbol på oprør.
