I think my two-years of learning German doesn't quite help me here... But your English has nothing wrong in it! At least not any more than mine (another non-native English writer as I am) :D
But this is a strange subject in a way: I could never ever write fanfiction in my native language. I have sometimes tried to read some, and they... well.. it sounds so WRONG! (then again those writers aren't too shiny either :D)
...means, you're writing in English and not in your native language? (Strange! I can't write a single word in English...! Stories, of course).
Maybe I should try to translate a story of mine? Soon I'll have holidays and I could try... but I will fail, this is my fear... (and the stories are VERY long....)
Yep, I am from Finland (native language is Finnish), and I have written in English for a few years now... Short stories, long stories... and am still trying to get better :)
All you need is practise (like reading a lot in English), and a little faith - and a good beta *hugs piximyr* - and it's all fine. Translating is a good idea, and I'm sure there's a lot of people from German out there too who could help... But then again, you know your own story best, and I think it is always for the best when author translates the text personally. :)
Same here: I couldn't write in Dutch if you put a gun at my temple, let alone French! (Of course I can't write anything anymore these days, but that's another story. Just ignore.) I think it's because I started reading slash in English and this is the language par excellence that I associate with slash.
I did read a lot of French slash at one time. It sound so totally different though. The language used by the author gives a very distinct flavor to a fic.
I totally agree. Some of the porn/slash fics I've read in Finnish... *makes face* Ok, so those people can't really write, but it sounds so stiff it makes me sick. Not "beautiful" or "sensual" in any way.
(I'm kinda worried of what will happen with my series of books that I'm writing. Eventually, there will be slash in it, and as I'm writing the whole thing in Finnish... oh well, perhaps I can do it by the time I get there :D Or then I will rate it PG *g*)
And hey, writing is totally a season product kind of thing! I have been struggling with a single fic for months! (yeah, that's right, months....) I've had the time to do it, but seemingly not the will. I haven't had a writer's block, and still... And today I've made huge progress with it all the sudden *fans self* Guess I've turned a "new" page in my life XD
So, keep writing and practising letosghanima; we don't deal well with excuses like that *evil snickering* We need more writer's - there's never too many of us...
There's definitely a specific vocabulary that comes with slash as well, and well, maybe in some languages people haven't found the right words yet. It's like some common "sub-language" needs be found...
I'm babbling (*lol*).
Yeah, I have a severe case of writer's block but I also know that I'm not ready yet to do something about it. Thanks for the encouragement though ^_^.
Good luck with your books (plural? Wow!). What are they about?
You just need a solid kick from some fandom/idea/person to get the writing going... that's how it goes... have you tried plotting with someone? that usually works... though I have never finished a single story that is co-written, so I still have no idea how that really works :D (perhaps each and every one of those teams work differently....)
And the books are some X-Files kind of stuff, and I'm planning it to be a long series... we'll see how that goes. For now, it's on hold as I'm trying to finish some Real Person fics and other stuff that's kinda bothering me. I thought I could focus on several things at once, but hey, when you're writing in two languages, one has to bow before the other (and sadly, Finnish is right now running like a coward :D)
